though this doesn’t always equate to productivity. More intricate tools like AI/ML (artificial intelligence/ machine learning) technologies can offer business leaders more precise insights as to where and when workers are being the most productive,” Vladmirskiy said. Knowing that employees would rebel if they knew they were begin monitored means employers need to establish trust and autonomy between the organization and the workers, Vladmirskiy acknowledged. “Workers should be trusted to utilize their company laptops and other tech responsibly, and when mutually agreed upon with their employers, the overall experience trends positive,” he said. “Oftentimes, many organizations will implement these monitoring tools for the safeguarding of sensitive data rather than tracking employees’ productivity. Workers should also anticipate that for some industries this shielding of highly sensitive information requires these technologies, such as hybrid and remote health care workers.” But even in those circumstances, Vladmirskiy said it is critical that managers effectively communicate the monitoring policies and processes to employees so everyone feels informed and empowered, rather than “spied” on. When trust and autonomy are established, employees should feel comfortable to voice concerns they may have around surveillance monitoring, Vladmirskiy said, adding that “companies need to effectively address these worries when necessary.” At the end of the day, the integration of monitoring capabilities should be a driver of support for employees, Vladmirskiy advised, and it’s up to organizations to ensure this sentiment is felt in the workplace, he emphasized. After all, the increase of monitoring employees goes hand-in-hand with the rise of remote work, and it’s likely to grow even more prevalent. “Now more than ever, companies are implementing monitoring tools and technologies to enhance the digital employee experience,” Vladmirskiy said. He cited a Gartner report that suggests that by 2025, more than 50 percent of IT organizations will use digital employee experience to prioritize and measure digital initiative success – a significant increase from fewer than 5 percent in 2021. “The insights provided by these tools allow managers to more effectively notice when workers are feeling burnt out, the areas in which they thrive, and those areas where additional support or training is needed,” Vladmirskiy said. What’s somewhat silly is that many employees know they are being monitored simply because of the tools they already use. It doesn’t always take installation of spy cams or surveillant materials. “Microsoft 365 suite is a great example of a monitoring tool that can drive an employee’s overall experience with actionable insights and transparency,” Vladmirskiy pointed out. Periodically, the Microsoft 365 suite provides employees with a report that shows a complete picture of where and how they spend their time within the Microsoft suite. The report identifies how much time is spent in meetings or how much focus time an employee has. The catch here is, “Employers do not have access to these insights, and the report is designed to improve workers’ personal habits and productivity by showing them actionable and informative data,” Vladmirskiy explained. Still, as remote work grows, employers concerned about ensuring they are getting the best bang for their employee pay likely will increase. “The pandemic has had a transformational impact on many organizations, by bringing in new ways of working, which has put a greater emphasis on improving the overall digital employee experience,” Vladmirskiy said. “Remote and hybrid work is here to stay, and as organizations continue to navigate this new landscape, these monitoring tools and technologies will become more commonplace. “However, this is nothing to fear,” he continued, “as the integration of surveillance monitoring is designed to enable workers to have a rewarding and productive experience, regardless of their location or device.” J Are you requiring work monitoring software for remote workers?
